Overview

This meeting will bring together African researchers and students, conservationists, resource managers, educators, government wildlife agencies and other relevant NGOS from as many range countries as possible. Sirenian experts from outside Africa are also invited to attend to share their expertise. Spoken and poster presentations of African manatee research and conservation results from across the species range will be invited to highlight work that has been accomplished over the past twelve years, as well as presentations on specific topics by sirenian experts from other parts of the world that are applicable to African manatees. The workshop will also include round tables on priority topics such as threat mitigation, enforcement needs and raising awareness. This symposium is needed now to consolidate and share the important knowledge gained about African manatees, to plan for research and conservation actions needed in the next ten years and beyond, and to foster and strengthen network connections by bringing researchers together in person.

Symposium Objectives:

  • Provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of African manatee research and conservation activities.
  • Provide information on research and activities with other sirenian species, from researchers working in other parts of the world.
  • Facilitate round table discussions of all participants to formulate strategies for addressing the most important issues facing African manatees in the next ten years.
  • Facilitate the exchange of information and identify collaborative opportunities for scientists conducting African manatee research.
