Susan Whiting

Board Member

Susan B. (Soo) Whiting has a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany from Marlboro College, a Masters in Environmental Education from Oregon State University and a travel consultant certificate from Crimson Travel. Her senior project at Marlboro College was the Distribution of Vascular Plants on Martha’s Vineyard. She was part of the education staff and managed the Animal Room at the Science Museum in Boston, MA. She met her husband Phillips (Flip) Harrington and together they purchased a sailing vessel and ran research charters between Maine and the Caribbean annually. Susan wrote grants and organized the crew which studied Humpback Whales in the Dominican Republic, Rock Iguanas in the Bahamas and Colonial Nesting Birds on Martha’s Vineyard. Susan and Flip formed Osprey Tours. Susan designed and co-ed natural history and birding tours to Latin America for 25 years. She and her husband worked for the American Canadian Caribbean Cruise Line where Flip was the captain of the vessel and Soo the naturalist. Susan has served on boards of several conservation organizations and was a past vice president of the Florida Ornithological Society. Susan is the co-author of Vineyard Birds and Vineyard Birds II. She has been a natural history columnist on bird life and natural history for the Vineyard Gazette for over 30 years. Susan and her husband now reside on Martha’s Vineyard, travel as much as they can and thoroughly enjoy it.
